General VP Malik was Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army from 01 October 1997 to 30 September 2000. Concurrently, he was Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee of India.
As Army Chief, he had dual responsibility of being an advisor to the Government as well as commander of 1.2 million strong Indian army to fulfil its national role and assigned missions.
As Chief of the Army and Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee, he coordinated and oversaw planning and execution of Operation Vijay to successfully defeat Pakistan’s attempted intrusion in Kargil Sector in 1999.
A graduate from the Defence Services Staff College and MSc in Defence and Strategic Studies from the Madras University, General Malik is an alumnus of Army War College, Mhow and National Defence College, New Delhi. He was awarded Ati Vishishta Seva Medal in 1986 and Param Vishishta Seva Medal in 1996. Later, he was given ‘Excellence in Leadership’ award by Atur Foundation, Pune; ‘Distinguished Fellowship’ of the Institute of Directors, New Delhi; and ‘Pride of the Nation’ award by the Doon Citizens’ Council in July 2000.
Post retirement, he was nominated as a member of the National Security Advisory Board for two terms (2001-2003).
Since 2003, General Malik has been serving as an Independent Director/Advisor of some well known multinational companies.
In 2007, he was nominated on the judges’ panel to select and rank Top Companies for Leaders in Asia Pacific Region by Hewitt Associates, who undertook this exercise in collaboration with Fortune Magazine and The RBL Group.
