He picked up the rifle at the tender age of 13, and since then he has been unstoppable in his pursuit of excellence. His road to success has been riddled with hurdles. Wrong perceptions, ignorant officials, lack of awareness & importance, towards his sport. And personal hurdles like anxiety and an imperfect eyesight of -2.75 in a sport that requires a perfect eye. But Abhinav Bindra has always believed that the harder you work, the luckier you get. His desire for success made him do crazy things. To enhance his performance he soiled the soles of his shoes with a Ferrari tyre. He even attached electrodes to his head to understand activities in his brain while performing well. Add to that a disciplined regimen of arduous practice and exercise. If there was anything that could make his performance better, rest assured, Abhinav did it! In a sport that requires tremendous mental strength and is so tough to master that few even dare to attempt it, Abhinav has stood out. His sheer hardwork, unparalled focus and perfectionist attitude have made him a class apart. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, The Arjuna Award, The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and many International Gold Medals inclusive of Common Wealth, Asian, European circuit medals. His never-say-die attitude saw him come back from a severe back injury and also from the defeat in Athens 2004 Olympics, quite literally with a bang. On 24 July 2006, he became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship Gold for India. And at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he took a shot at history! Since the launch of modern Olympics in 1896, India had never received an individual Gold for over 110 years! Abhinav became the first and only individual from India to win Gold in the Men's 10m Air Rifle event. It was the first time ever the Indian Tricolour was hoisted at Olympic Games with National Anthem in a individual category.
